... and I was expecting it to as the oil life was down to 20%.
Well it hit
15% yesterday... and I like to do my oil changes a little early, so it’s time now to get it done.
But the Service Minder indicator also told me I have to also change the air intake filter (did that recently so I don’t have to worry about it), spark plugs (already have them) and... a valve adjustment.
Apparently the Fit has valves that have to be adjusted every so often and it’s apparently very important for ensuring the engine will last. So... I’m going to do my first valve adjustment ever very soon... after I get myself a feeler gauge set.
Already studied this youtube video:
It doesn’t seem hard to do... just time consuming if you care about doing it right. .

I believe the K series requires valve adjustments too. That and the J V6 still using a timing belt still seems amusing to me.
But it works, so I guess that’s all that matters.

Is that the 1907-08 Honda Fit?

Seriously, I did not know any modern “normal” car would possibly require valve adjustment?!

Honestly blown away that this is required on a fit. However, t hat is one of the easier valve adjustments I have seen. I’ve done it on the M3 and I’m about to do it on the 02 which seems trickier. If you have only ever done oil changes/brakes. A valve adjustment is a great step up, plus the insides of engines are cool.

Honda probably figured that adjusting valve clearance on the
rocker arms is easier than replacing bucket shims and less prone to the
failure modes of hydraulic valve adjusters caused by oil sludge
. Just looking at the cover pic on the video makes it look like one could adjust those valve while blind-folded.

Solid lifters are still a thing on a few engines, IIRC it’s done because it’s cheaper, it’s a bit lighter, it gives a
bit more precise valve actuation (improving emissions), and there’s a bit less horsepower
loss (because the oil pump isn’t working as hard as with hydraulic lifters).

It surprised me too. But after watching that video, I decided doing the plugs and valve adjustment is easy enough I can do it myself and it doesn’t need much in the way of special tools.
And since it’s a relatively simple inline engine, it’s not as complicated as it would be with other cars... like some with transverse V6 engines.

plenty of engines out there with DAMB tappets and no required adjustment interval.

I haven’t adjusted the valves on a Honda Fit but I did on a 1990 Prelude and it looks similar. Should be very easy to do right, and will make your engine much quieter and happier. One of those really satisfying jobs

It’s pretty straightforward on the M3 because of the straight 6 however, you use shims and it’s real easy to drop them where the shouldn’t go.

Yeah... I was reading up on the merits of having solid lifters that need to be adjusted vs hydraulically adjusted lifters .
And related to this, I read that hydraulically adjusted lifters mean that more frequent oil changes are necessary.
And tied in with that,
according to the maintenance minder, I still have 15% of life left in my oil even though the last time I did an oil change was around 10,500km ago. I’m not used to having oil change intervals this long. But the computer takes a bunch of real-world data into account when it tells me how much life is left in the oil. On top of that, what the Fit’s maintenance minder tells me jibes with what I see with the condition of the oil... in that it still looks/feels/smells
to be in good condition.

I also read some where that if you want to tune an engine, solid lifters are preferred as well.

Pick up one of these tools as it makes it much easier to unlock, make a fine adjustment and re-lock the adjuster without messing up the adjustment. It’s basically a flat head screwdriver that rotates inside the 10mm socket. I picked the first link which was for $29 but there are cheaper versions out there that work the same.

Note, what you are doing is checking valve clearances and adjusting them as necessary. They don’t move much in my experience. Hopefully all of your clearances are already in spec.

I’m guessing that there are at least a couple that are out of spec given some ticking sounds I hear... particularly when cold.
Where have all the lightweights gone?

My wife had a Fit when we started dating, and I have first-hand experience with this. It lasted well over 200k miles, and it was a blast to drive.
If you don’t adjust the valves on this motor, the car will stall while in gear. In particular, it would stall when you were braking and off the gas. I think I was the first one in her family to figure out how to not stall it by lightly tapping the gas while at idle.

It is not too bad. Once you get things apart it really only takes a few minutes to check the valves. I did it for the first time on a 3.5 Honda pilot...that was a challenge to say the least. The fit was simple by comparison. It made a noticeable difference in power and idle on both vehicles . You should consider replacing the coil packs, too.

If you’re really curious about the condition of the oil you could send it to Blackstone Labs and they’ll tell ya what they see

I thought you only had to check/adjust them “if noisy” was Honda’s wording

I could, but I won’t. I’m not trying to get every last mile out of my oil. I typically change it a little early based on either what it says in the manual, or (in the case of the Fit) when it says I should change the oil according to the maintenance minder.

Apparently when the spark plugs are due
, a valve check/adjustment is due as well... or so the Fit’s maintenance minder tells me.
And to get to the spark plugs means removing covers and intake bits anyway, so I might as well.
I think my Fit has the original plugs... which are supposed to last at least 150,000km. My Fit has around 166,000km on it.
And I’m hearing some noises that just might be due to valve clearances being a bit out of spec.
It still drives fine, but there are
some ticking sounds, particularly when cold.

There’s probably a reason why Honda didn’t use DAMB tappets... probably a cost/simplicity thing. Especially considering the Fit and the L-series engine is targeted mostly at the low end of the market.

No harm in playing with them, I would guess 8 thou intake 10 thou exhaust is a good minimum at least for B and D series race cars. My bet is that it is the same for you. G et some bent feeler gauge and give it a shot .

PS. get some Hondabond or RTV ga sket matl to glue the valve cover gasket into the cover and over the cam bearings otherwise you will have problems.

Highly recommend doing this if you think you can hear the valves, and even if you don’t for anyone upwards of 150k miles . I got my first F it (of fou r in my family) with about 1 30k miles, with this issue, stalling real easily until warmed up. Adjusting the valves took care of it, and gave better performance and economy, not to mention more quiet. Personally I think it’s well worth having to do this once in the vehicle’ s lifetime, for the better economy and, like you pointed out, longer oil intervals.

I’ve read that on the Fit, it’s a good idea to adjust them every 80,000 miles.
I’m at a little over 103
,000 miles. So I’m going to do them after I get the oil change out of the way.

Yeah... based on what I saw in the video,
I ordered some RTV along with a new valve cover gasket and a feeler gauge set (with the feeler sizes I need) from Rock Auto

I would order some Hondabond. It is tackier and it forms as a sticky paste. It is the Honda of gasket sealers. Ps, don’t over do it. let the Hondabond hold the gasket in place and then let the gasket do the work. Also, there is an O ring in the valve cover, right?

I just did mine this weekend, the exhausts were for the most part very tight and the intakes slightly loose?, I did not measure exactly where they were, but could not even get the feeler gauge in at the factory gap for most of not all of the exhaust valves.
Car was at 95,000 miles, it now idles smoother (it was getting a little uneven) and seems perkier, so glad I did it. Took three hours, I probably could have saved a few minutes with a bent feeler gauge, doable with a flat one, but a little harder to find the gap and gauge the clearance.
